Best Achievement in Payments Processing

Entries will be accepted from companies who offer processing facilities, in any part of the payments value chain, for card or account-based electronic payment. This can be in the physical or virtual environment. Where relevant, submissions can be in conjunction with other payment providers or the merchant customer. The entries must demonstrate that the implementation is effective and commercially viable. Entries may be in respect of a single significant project or programme, which does not have to be new during the reporting period, but results must refer to activity between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.

  • The programme has been demonstrably successful.

Best Technology Initiative of the Year

This award will recognise card brands, issuers, banking acquirers or other payments companies who have leveraged new or existing information and communications technology in either an innovative or creative manner to deliver an innovative solution related to payments or indeed to create a new opportunity. Entries are encouraged from organisations which can demonstrate and measure the use of information technology as an enabler for business and customer advantage. The qualifying period is 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2018.

Award Judging Criteria

  • Degree to which the technology is the key enabler of the initiative.
  • The technology delivers an innovative solution to a specific problem or creates an opportunity.
  • The benefits to the business and / or customer delivered by the use of technology.
  • Demonstrate competitive advantage.

Best Initiative in Mobile Payments

Entries are invited which demonstrate an initiative which has at its core the integration of the payment functionality delivered via the mobile channel i.e. mobile telephone or other mobile communications device. Entries should cover mobile based payments initiatives implemented or launched between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. Entries should be submitted by the organisation that has the direct interface with the end payer or the retailer / merchant that is offering the programme.

  • Speed of adoption by users and other indicators of strong market reception.
  • Demonstrate commercial success including relevant metrics.

Best Service to Business

This award will go to the card issuer or brand that can show how it has offered the best service focussed on the corporate customer (large and small). Judges will be interested in creative and innovative elements of the service, including how it can deliver value to users and also assist in managing costs and driving savings. The service does not necessarily need to be card-based. Results should reflect achievements during the period between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.

Best Security or Anti-Fraud Development

Open to card issuers, banking acquirers, retailers and other payment companies who will be expected to set out an innovative solution which has improved the security of customers’ transactions at any stage of the payment process or has protected the customer from internet, mobile or other card-not-present (CNP) fraud, identity theft, card interception etc. Submissions for your fraud prevention or detection initiative should focus on activity between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.

  • Innovative nature of the security/ anti-fraud development.
  • Evidence of material uplift in customer security and fraud control.
  • Demonstrate commercial success including relevant metrics.

Best Alternative or Digital Payments Programme

Entries will be accepted from companies who offer facilities for any electronic payment or money transmission  e.g. which do not necessarily require a physical card or card account. This could include electronic wallets, peer to peer payments, money transmission services, e-money, wearables, electronic vouchers or cheques and other digital payments propositions, but excludes mobile payments. Programmes do not have to be new during the reporting period but results must refer to activity and developments between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.

Best Benefits or Loyalty Programme of the Year

Entries will be accepted from card brands, issuers, merchant acquirers , retailers and other payments companies for payments related benefits and loyalty programmes launched between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. Judges will be looking for examples of benefits packages or linked loyalty engagement programmes, where entrants can demonstrate how they have addressed customer needs and targeted an attractive value proposition to specific customers to drive increased engagement / loyalty, improved sales and overall benefits to both customer and provider. For acquirer entries, judges will want to see innovative merchant programmes that incentivise and reward customers. Great programmes are only great if they have increased loyalty.

  • Evidence of success in generating increased sales, improved loyalty and overall benefits to both customer and provider – provide relevant metrics.

Social Inclusion in Financial Services

This award is open to any qualifying entrant who has made a significant contribution in the last twelve months to the advancement of socially inclusive treatment of customers. Entries should demonstrate how the customer is at the heart of the organisation’s business activities and how the organisation is delivering consistently fair outcomes to all consumers, is proactive about remedying any shortcomings and how social and financial inclusion is integral to their business culture and ethos. Entries may be in respect of a single significant project or programme, as well as to those organisations who are seeking to cater to vulnerable consumers (demographically, financially or socio-economically). The qualifying period is 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2018.

Award Judging Criteria

  • The degree to which financial inclusion has been advanced within the reporting period.
  • Evidence of innovation with regards to fair treatment of all customers.
  • Entry evidences that good business performance and the principles of financial inclusion are entirely compatible.

Best Initiative from an SME

This new award is open to all industry participants from small and medium enterprises (fewer than 250 employees and turnover of less than £40M), who can demonstrate success of an initiative launched between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. Judges will be looking for projects and innovations which demonstrate an increase in the organisation’s competitiveness and effectiveness in the wider market. Initiatives can be a product, service, technology, system or programme.

  • Degree of innovation.

Best Achievement in Retail Payments

This category is open to all organisations involved in the retail payments chain.  Where appropriate, submissions can be in conjunction with their merchant acquirers, PSPs or other payments providers, who have demonstrated a proactive approach to payments by embracing payments as a core part of their business strategy.  The initiative or series of payments initiatives (supporting either online and / or face to face payments) should show what activities have undertaken during the qualifying period to set them apart as a strong advocate of frictionless commerce and has resulted in improvements to the customer experience and a corresponding uplift in business performance.  The qualifying period is 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.

Award Judging Criteria

  • The degree to which payments strategy is at the core of the retailer's business approach and the extent to which the retailer is committed to frictionless commerce.
  • The range of payments initiatives which have been introduced during the qualifying period.
  • The degree to which the payments strategy has allowed the retailer to develop its relationship with its customers.
  • Evidence of an improvement in customer experience and / or business performance as a result of retailer's approach to payments.
  • Demonstrate competitive advantage.

Changing lives in the Community

Entries are invited from all industry participants to demonstrate a project that has benefited broader society. The judges will be looking for a successful community project illustrating results achieved between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018, which has effectively delivered its corporate and social responsibility objectives and has made a material and sustainable difference to the community/ stakeholder groups it is serving.

Award Judging Criteria

  • The programme relates to community, social or ethical issues.
  • The programme demonstrably benefits key stakeholder groups.
  • The programme has been successful and will deliver a sustainable impact.
  • Provide relevant metrics.

Best Payments Industry Newcomer

The Card and Payments Awards welcome entries for this exciting award which recognises a newcomer organisation that commenced operating no earlier than 36 months prior to 1 April 2018. The organisation will be offering a payments related service or product which is delivering value and benefit to any aspect of the payments ecosystem. The organisation will be making an impact through performance, innovation, value to stakeholders etc. It will deliver an innovative solution to a specific set of problems or indeed it may be creating opportunity. The judges will be interested to see that the organisation is performing well and gaining in traction with an initiative that promises longevity. The organisation might evidence developed relationships, implementations, contracts and other indications of positive performance.

Award Judging Criteria

  • The organisation delivers an innovative solution or creates an opportunity.
  • The organisation is performing well, gaining traction in the market and further growth is projected.
  • The organisation stands out from its' competition.
  • The degree that the entrant can evidence a trajectory towards success.

Best Consumer Credit Card or Credit Facility

Entries are invited for credit card products (including charge cards) and credit facilities available to consumers in the UK and Ireland between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. As an ‘of the year’ category, submissions must be in respect of products that have been either launched or are existing products which have been refreshed and repromoted during the qualifying window. Judges will be looking for products which offer best value to the customer, show creative or innovative elements and can demonstrate commercial success delivered during the reporting period.

  • Evidence the creative and innovative elements of the product.
  • Demonstrate commercial success – provide any available relevant metrics.
  • How effectively the programme deepens the customer / provider relationship.

Best Debit Card Programme of the Year

The award will go to the best debit card and associated current account available to consumers during the period 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018.  As an ‘of the year’ category, submissions should be in respect of debit card programmes that have been launched or are existing programmes which have been refreshed and re-promoted during the qualifying window. Judges will be looking for products which offer best value to the customer. The winning product will clearly demonstrate that it meets the needs of its target customers, with particular focus on assessing the attributes of benefits, features and customer service. The entry should also demonstrate evidence of commercial success.

Best Prepaid Product of the Year

Entries are invited for prepaid products (cards, virtual etc.) available to consumers between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. As an ‘of the year’ category, submissions must be in respect of products that have been either launched or are existing products which have been refreshed and re-promoted during the qualifying window. Judges will be looking for products with an innovative application which respond to targeted customer needs, offer good value and which can evidence commercial success. Judges will be interested in how the programme has been delivered and how this affects overall utilisation e.g. suitable distribution networks for end users, customer service and ease of reloading as appropriate.

  • How the prepaid product has been successfully delivered to end users.

Best Industry Innovation of the Year

Entries are invited from all industry participants. Judges will be looking for innovations implemented or launched between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018, which have increased the organisation’s competitiveness and effectiveness and could be considered firsts in the market. An innovation can be a product, service, technology, system or procedure.

Best Design of the Year

The judges will make this award to the card brand / issuer  or payments provider who can demonstrate creative thinking behind the design of its card or digital payments interface. Qualifying designs will have been brought to market between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. The design should stand out  in the market and serve to enhance the relationship between customer and provider. Whether physical card or digital interface the judges will be looking for designs that are complimentary with the brand and can evidence that the design has performed well.

If you are submitting a card design please send 14 physical samples in addition to a high resolution image. If you are submitting a digital payments interface please submit high resolution images.

Based on entries, the judges reserve the right to make two awards in this category: 1) Best Card Design and 2) Best Digital Interface.

Best Marketing Campaign of the Year

As an ‘of the year’ category, entries are invited for a payments related marketing campaign executed between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018. Entrants should outline, within the context of an overall marketing strategy, how their organisation has used an integrated campaign to improve market share, drive sales,  enhance customer loyalty and drive customer engagement, target specific or new markets etc.

NB. While look and feel is important in this category, proof of success is critical.

Award Judging Criteria

  • Creativity and use of techniques to successfully engage with target audience and achieve objectives
  • Campaign differentiators and innovations.
  • Results achieved in terms of brand awareness and /or sales.
  • To what extent the campaign was a success against objectives - provide relevant metrics.

Best Achievement in Customer Service

Entrants are invited from card issuers, their brands, merchant acquirers and other payments providers who should demonstrate a true understanding of their customers’ needs through the delivery of customer service excellence. Entry submissions should detail specific significant achievements and initiatives between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018 which show proof of the impact of an innovative customer care strategy on customer satisfaction and retention levels. Entries must be associated with the  payment product (as opposed to general bank account servicing) or in the case of merchant acquirers with their merchant customers.

Award Judging Criteria

  • Evidence of deployment of innovative and effective customer care strategy during the qualifying period.
  • Use of multiple channels of customer service delivery to better meet consumer needs.
  • Evidence that customer service achievements are driving excellence and improving levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Provide relevant metrics.

Industry Achievement Award

This special award is open to all and will be presented to an individual or team or who has had an influential impact on the industry. The achievement is likely to have made a significant contribution to the advancement and success of any aspect of the card and payments industry. Nominations may apply to anyone in the industry and are not restricted to financial institutions. The judges will nominate candidates that they feel qualify for this award; however individuals or organisations are also welcome to submit nominations by 1 October 2018. The nominations should consist of a maximum of 250 words detailing the achievement and why it should be recognised.

  • Importance of and reach of nominated achievement.
  • Degree to which nominated achievement can have an impact on the rest of industry.
